I thought it would be a good idea to write something on this; the title alone will draw in those who immediately and automatically associate the word with ritual orgies and debauchery.
In fact, the word is from the Sanskrit tn , to stretch (as in "tension") and tra "a means of crossing over". Thus, "Tan Tra" means "practical methods for 'reaching across' the gulf that separates the mundane from the Divine, the physical from the numinous." Since this constitutes what is known in the West as"Magick", the word also has the implication of "occult methods".
In fact "occult powers" are attained automatically once one has reached a certain level of spiritual development. Any reputable guru will advise his chela to "shun them like feces", since they are an obstacle on the Path of liberation. Being heavily karmic, they are, if exercised, certain to cause the 'fall" of the disciple back into the samsara (Malkuth), and all his efforts to attain "liberation' will have been neatly stymied.
The Left Hand Path is doubly difficult, since it combines the baser temptations of existence with the subsequent temptation of the attainment of occult powers on the Path one takes.
But, the Left Hand Path is also the Path of WOMAN.
Thus, for half the human race, the domain of the "Left Hand" is their natural habitat. Few avail themselves of this fact, of course. This is what is meant by "Isis is all women and all women are Isis."

The very best books I have ever read on the methods of the Left Hand Path are those written by Dr. Robert E Svoboda: the "Aghora" series.
It may interest some to know that Shri Ramakrishna was an initiate of the Left Hand Path. He received actual initiations using corpse flesh and naked young women.
But , so God-centred was he that there was no danger of a "fall"; those who are truly pursuing this Path for the Light it can bring and not for the satisfaction of prurient and base desires under the pretext of "practicing religion", automatically come under the protection of Ramakrishna, and thus of God.
I can directly ascribe the fact that I was "kept safe thus far" on the Path to Ramakrishna; it was in fact thanks to the late Aghori "Vimalananda" (the subject of the "Aghora" books, of which the second "Kundalini" is the most insightful exposition on the topic as anyone could wish) that I was made aware of the Master Ramakrishna.
