I started finding out about Shri Ramakrishna in or around 1994, when I had my first "kundalini awakening".There are many Indian saints but Shri Ramakrishna stands out from them all, Born in 1836, at dawn, on February 18, sixty miles northwest of Calcutta, in India, he is truly the Avatar or the Aquarian Age. Much is known about his life; the main feature of it is that he had literally NO interest in anything except GOD. Many people have never heard of Ramakrishna but have heard of Mahatma Gandhi...well, Gandhi's spiritual preceptor was Swami Vivekananda...who in his turn was Ramakrishna's most beloved disciple.
Vivekananda was, by all accounts a polymath; he was supremely intelligent , well read, well educated, and was versed in the musical arts as well. Curiously enough, he was introduced both to the Bhagavad-Gita (one of the greatest of Hindu Scriptures, the Bhagavad-Gita was the first of the numerous Hindu scriptures to be translated into another language ) and Ramakrishna himself, by WESTERNERS. Ramakrishna was greatly respected by many spiritual leaders of the day, so many of the Anglo-Indians found their way into the ranks of his followers.
When Vivekananda first met Ramakrishna, he asked him "Can God be seen?" Ramakrishna answered immediately "God can be seen. In fact, at this moment, I can see God more clearly than I see you!
But who wants to see God? People will shed jugfuls of tears for their families and their possessions, but who weeps for God? Anyone who sheds tears out of a desire to see God will have their wish fulfilled very rapidly!" (PS: This is TRUE.)
