I find this a very interesting teaching, had I think chiefly among pagans- the Quaternity,
"To Will; To Know; To Dare; To Keep Silence...."
First, Will: In individual development- "Individuation" might be a term- something arises in the person, according to natural development. It's said, by some gurus, that Will cannot be had by anyone except they have physical perfection... Will begins to exercise hegemony over the human being, whereas before, others have been instructing, guiding, teaching, admonishing. exhortising, chastising, etc.... from one's earliest years. One doesn't go through a natural learning process- someone else is always it seems telling one what to believe, how to do this, that, etc.... Will is I think related to Personal Power, such as shamen use the term.
Next, To Know: Beginning with a kind of intuition, one begins to gain correct viewpoints, to "see through" people, according to the nature, level of impeccability and perfection of their motives. One arrives at the occult, correct viewpoints and assayals of matters; popular ignorance, the incredibly widespread phenomenon, loses its hold over the individual. Popular opinions of historical events, for example, are circumvented by the correct viewpoints; by gnosis- as well as the current epoch's.
Third, To Dare: One decides to maintain such correct viewpoints and attitudes; one stops pandering in conformity, just to please someone, or for social acceptance, such as from a group. One may consider daring to openly express what one has learned, even if it makes some friendships or organic fellowship more difficult.
Fourth, To Keep Silence: Keeping silence, keeping secrets (not revealing one's problems, for example)- this is surely a weak point of so many- Vanity makes it harder- perhaps a little harder for males, who are naturally the Enterprising types. One might consider, "I should thrust in my sickle, for social reform, and reap with all my might!" (after all, I've got the Correct...)- but this could be unwise, unfruitful, deleterious, or even disastrous! There certainly is a dearth for Silence, in our society- part of this is due undoubtedly to the more bellicose temperament of americans- so many are looking for a conflict or altercation it seems; their belief that everything must "hit the fan" sooner or later- the sooner might be better! People reveal their problems to others- it's not likely that there is more than one person to whom you ought to reveal your problems, if anyone; there can be danger in choosing a psychiatrist for this, I'll add! A little less expression of opinions on sensitive topics would most probably be better...
