I've never been involved with the group Scientology, and don't know anyone who has- I will simply say that there is a convergence between doctrines I've read about, in Hubbard's writings and my own conclusions. I actually don't know exactly how they are explaining Engrams, durrently, but will impart my own findings on the topic. I'm not sure it is spelled out clearly by Scientology that past life experiences of serious, or grave injuries- which are survival or life threatening- cause the little abberrative mechanisms called Engrams. I've learned from dreams- some rather nightmarish- that such bad experiences don't even need to be from human past lives, but could be an experience you had as an animal- for example, as a Neanderthal ape, you might have been nearly eaten alive by shrews! Or, you may have been an extinct animal which had a very low survival ability- perhaps with horns, but they were smooth and polished at the ends; not sharp or pointy! You experienced persistent attacks and injuries... In more recent human incarnations, it might have been a serious accident, such as being bitten by a horse, which caused a survival threatening wound... Engrams are what make people a little crazy, you could say- they can be worked out. The best first step is of course to become aware of them, most probably... they surface in the psyche.
Mr. Hubbard decided to codify his findings as a Church- this was for certain legal issues which arose- for one thing, the American Psychiatric Association had rebuffed him, when he had approached them. I will confer with the negativity of Scientology on the APA- after exploring the route of Lobotomies, they came up with incredibly dangerous, deleterious drugs which were like chemical lobotomies, in effect... And they had rejected a man who had something truly helpful, whereas the Freud tradition is not. There is basically nothing helpful in that empty tradition. It might be better if the imprint of it was erased from the popular mind, I concur- as some of the well known followers imply they believe, in comments...
